When and Why to Use Kinesiotape
Kinesiotape is an elastic tape, primarily made of cotton fibers, commonly used in sports physical therapy, but also for general clients. It helps muscles, tendons, or joints that are injured or overloaded to function better. Kinesiotape alleviates stress on the injured area, corrects joint alignment, stimulates muscle activity, and supports continuous blood and lymph flow. All these effects promote healing and relieve pain.
Effective Aid Before Performance
Kinesiotaping is widely used to reduce pain during physical activity. Depending on how the tape is applied, it can stimulate skin receptors that influence muscle activity. Another taping technique provides mechanical correction of joint alignment (e.g., bunions, painful kneecap). Lymphatic taping aids in reducing swelling, making it helpful in treating sports injuries or post-surgery recovery.
Kinesiotape Extends the Benefits of Physical Therapy
At Fyzio svět, we use kinesiotaping as a complementary treatment to extend the effects of physical therapy. We’ve seen excellent results by combining shockwave therapy with kinesiotaping. There are hundreds of ways to apply kinesiotape. We choose the appropriate taping technique based on its desired effect—whether lymphatic, stimulating, corrective, or inhibitory. Through individualized exercises, joint mobilization, fascia release, and trigger point therapy, we aim to restore balance in the body. Kinesiotaping helps maintain this newly achieved symmetry for as long as possible.
When to Use Kinesiotaping
- Ankle support after frequent sprains
- Correction of bunions or fallen arches
- Relief for kneecap pain (front of the knee)
- Achilles tendon and calf muscle relaxation
- Support for torn or strained muscles
- After knee injuries or iliotibial band syndrome
- For neck pain, shoulder blade, and shoulder issues
- Menstrual pain, swelling, bruises, and improved blood and lymph flow
When Not to Apply Kinesiotape
- During acute thrombosis or severe inflammation
- On rashes or eczema
- Over damaged skin
- On warts
- In cases of fever
- For malignant tumors
If applied correctly, kinesiotape offers a range of positive effects, and you may feel the benefits, like improved stability or pain relief, immediately. However, improper application can lead to negative outcomes. In the best case, you may feel no relief, but in the worst, it could worsen your condition. Incorrect taping may cause headaches, uncomfortable pulling sensations, or pressure around the taped area. It may also impede lymphatic circulation, causing swelling to worsen.
That’s why it’s best to seek professional help, especially for serious medical issues. At Fyzio svět, we’re happy to assist or teach you the correct technique and help you choose a high-quality tape. For any further questions, feel free to ask your physiotherapist directly.
